Snow Days

From the Winston Salem Forsyth County School System website:

The 2009-10 school year will now end on June 10 as a result of school being canceled on Feb. 1 and 2. Remaining possible makeup days are March 29, March 30, June 11 and June 14. Makeup days would be used in that order.

Getting back into the swing of things….

We are getting close to ending (sigh, my boys say) of Winter Break. I don’t know if you feel the same way but it seems like a really long break! We’ve been blessed to spend out time in the mountains skiing (for me) and snowboarding (for them). Here are a few things I’m working on to try and get us back into the swing of school before it starts.

1. We are weaning them off the Christmas sugar. I finished the last of the pecan pie for breakfast and all the cookies have found their way onto my waist and their bellies. Now I have a few days to let them go through the sugar DT’s before unleashing them on their teachers.

2. I am making them go to bed at a decent time. This will go in the toilet New Year’s Eve but at least after that, I’ve got three days to get them into bed before the witching hour. What’s a decent time? Before the witching, I mean whining hour!

3. I am making breakfast again. Since the pecan pie is gone, we’ve moved from Krispy Kremes now to the more healthy cereals. (Fruit Loops) This also helps me to get into the routine of getting up and making food first thing in the morning.

4. We are working on setting a schedule. Sure, their schedule is still a schedule of fun, but we’ve got time limits (please get dressed before the day is through) and places to be (the ski lift opens at 8:30!) this is practice for moving about their schedule at school.

5. I go into my bedroom and sit in the silence for a few minutes, wondering how it’s going to be when my little ones are back in school and I’m stuck with having conversations with myself.

Create those memories to cherish during this times, they go by so quickly! See ya back at school on Jan 4th! What routines are you adopting to start off the New Year?

Holiday Parties

This Thursday and Friday, sigh, the last two days of school before Winter Break are the day of Holiday parties!

Thursday December 17th from 1:30p to 2:30p is the holiday party time for the 3-5th graders.

Friday December 18th from 1:30p to 2:30p is the holiday party time for the K-2nd graders.

Take the time to come and celebrate the Holiday with your child’s school family. They spend a lot of time with their peers and would love to show off their friends to family and show off family to their friends. Sure you get to sit in tiny chairs, eat a lot of snack food and candy, but the smile on your child’s face when they see you come through the door is worth the extra pounds. Many parents sign their children out after the party and use that extra time to go and visit Santa Claus or finish up some Christmas shopping.

From all of us at Old Richmond Elementary, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza and Happy Holidays! Have a great Winter Break and we’ll see you in the New Year!

Getting into the Holiday Spirit!

We’ve got a great week of entertainment! PTA meetings this week with a great performance by the students! So mark your calendars….

Tuesday, December 8th @ 7PM—PTA Meeting in Gym 3rd & 4th graders will perform.**

**Thursday, December 17th * 1:30-2:30—Holiday Party for 3rd – 5th graders.**

Then in case you haven’t marked your calendar…..

**Friday, December 18th * 1:30-2:30—Holiday Party for Kindergarten – 2nd graders.**

You probably received the note home about sending something in, to how many people are coming for the festivities (don’t forget grandma!), if you haven’t contact your teacher and I’m sure they’ve been making a list and checking it twice! Let’s spread some holiday cheer around Old Richmond Elementary!

Today is a day to be thankful, take a moment and count your blessings! As you relax with your family and friends remember to keep in your thoughts and prayers all those families with an empty place at their table for an American serviceman/woman. We are thankful for their sacrifices and wish them safety!

We are thankful for all the teachers who spend so much time and energy with our children! We put them on the bus or drop them off in the carpool line knowing that they are in good hands. Not only the grade teachers but all those specials teachers that share their love of a certain special, it may help to know that some of that love is catching, even if his version of “Hot Cross Buns” is a little tough on the old Mom’s ears. With these specials we know that our children have a rounded education, thank you for that. Our wonderful cafeteria staff, those tireless people who make all those meals and make sure our students have a hot, healthy meal everyday. We’re still teaching out children to say thank you, hopefully they are saying this in the cafeteria line.

Last but not least, thank you Ms. Fariss and Mr. O’Neal, thank you for keeping everything running smoothly and making each day seem effortless. Old Richmond is our children’s home away from home and your hard work makes them feel at home.

So we have many blessings to count, many things to be thankful for, as you sit back and relax with that extra bite of turkey, count blessings instead of calories!

Bookfair Update

Congratulations to Toni DeLoach for an incredible book fair! Thanks to all the volunteers who worked the bookfair, made food for our Night Around The World, and helped make this such a success!

50% of the proceeds from the Book Fair go to books for our library. This year’s book fair raised, drum roll please……

$8,349.43!!!!!

That means over $4,000 for library books from Scholastic! This is a great commitment to reading!

We will hold another Book Fair in the Spring, this one is a Buy One/Get One Free Fair so proceeds will not go to the school but there’s a free book for everyone purchased! Look for news on our Spring Event as it approaches.

Here’s to fall and the smell of paperback books in the air!

It’s beginning look a lot like Christmas

This weekend is the Festival Of Trees at the Education Building of Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. Take your children and enjoy trees decorated by local organizations and businesses, bid of Christmas decorations created by schools, enjoy a kids area of crafts and activities, watch dance recitals from the local dance schools AND visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus! Proceeds benefit the Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, it’s a great Christmas Wonderland putting us in the holiday spirit! Don’t forget the Secret Santa area, Santa’s elves help children purchase gifts (nominal in price) for their parents and friends in a secret area, everything is wrapped and you’ll spend the next month telling them that you can’t open that precious present until Christmas. Hope to see you there enjoying a Holly Jolly time as it begins to look a lot like Christmas!

We traveled the world, and bought a few books!

What fun yesterday at our “Taste Around The World” event at the book fair! Many thanks to all the volunteers that made this possible. Here’s all the good food: Spanipokipa, Taquitos, Irish Soda Bread, Brie, Baquette, sausage, hummus, pita, and some African Red Bush tea! It all disappeared!

We had a crowd! Books were flying AND the teachers made out like BANDITS! Thanks to all the great parents for helping out the school by buying books and helping out the teachers by buying books on their wish list!

If you missed it, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of books at the Book Fair. The fair runs during the afternoon all this week! If you are not sure what to buy the teachers, we offer gift certificates that let the teachers come in and buy books for their classrooms, a win/win situation.

Thanks to all the parents/volunteers for making our Eating Around The World Celebration what a resounding success. We’re thinking about an International Festival for the kids….what do you think?

Book Fair – Food, Fun, Family and Fairytales?

The book fair offically started yesterday with our Young Readers Program at school. There were guest speakers from Wake Forest University, Mr. Oatmeal, I mean, Mr. O’Neal, and two Moms-your humble blogger included. We read stories about runaway turkeys, pumpkin soup and friends, a Spanish turkey named Gracias and a Thanksgiving Spirit story illustrated by Ms. Ware’s Kindergarden class (written by your humble blogger). To everyone that was there, “Do you smell turkey?”

Even if you missed it, the fun is just beginning with the Book Fair. Next week on Tuesday from 4-6, come and sample food from around the world, look at cool items from different countries, listen to world music AND of course get your books at the book fair!

Take time to peruse the book fair with your child, let them pick a good book for that reading time at night, I know my boys love their nightly read, even if I am testing out something I’ve written and they think it stinks. An interesting statistic about children and words:

The average student learns about 3,000 words per year in the early school years (8 words per day).

Make some of those words from books at the book fair and branch out of the every day with a good book!

Remember proceeds from the book fair go back to the school for the library and students! If you haven’t picked up the latest Diary of Wimpy Kid, I’m sure you’ll get it at the Taste Around the World night with a great piece of fundue—-get it, FUNdue?
